What is the South Side of Maui?

South Maui (Kihei)

When we refer to Maui’s south side we are talking about the south end of the larger side of the island or Haleakala mountain which makes up the entire east side of the whole island.

This region is a desert climate and is primarily a flat stretch of land with one beach after another.

The towns in this region are Kihei, Wailea, and Makena going from the center of the island east respectively.

Kihei is primarily a local town with few resorts and each beach down this stretch is very similar to one another and not standout beaches compared to Maui’s other Gems. You can get surf lessons in this town, dine at cheaper restaurants, and go grocery shopping here if you are staying in this area.

Wailea has the high end resorts along some one Maui’s most beautiful beaches with clean sand, clear water, and good snorkeling. Here you’ll find the Shops at Wailea, many fine dining restaurants, and resorts such as the Four Seasons, Andaz, and Grand Wailea.

The Makena Area is a standout region if you are a beach and underwater person. The best scuba diving, snorkeling, and beaches are in this area. It also has massive lava field from Maui’s most recent eruption that you can trek through.
